What organizations should be on Mars to support the community? Will you therefore need a colony currency?

Our currency system will be non-existent at the start of our colony seeing as only essential personnel are being sent at the start and all of their jobs will be for the community. The bartering will be used up until the full establishment of the MDEC stations. The start of the community is very bare bones with no luxuries to be purchased and food rationed out to the colonists.

However once we open the Mars colony to non-essentials and non workers with no job that is needed by the community a currency will be implemented that is completely digital. This system ties and account to both someones finger print and a retina scan for added security. The scanners are licensed by the government to the vendors and they are the only ones that have them.

First you input your retina scan into the vendors scanner and in a 30 second period after the scan say the amount to be transacted and the system will recognize your voice as the second layer of security and finally you will use your fingerprint as confirmation of amount to transfer.

A single credit is worth one American dollar, or two Bajan dollars. The main reason for this is since the credits were based off of the value of the American dollar that is used by NASA. After maybe one hundred years of settlement trade can be established with Earth and the credit’s value may rise, but until then it at par with the American dollar.

How We Will Settle Mars

The way that we hope to land on Mars is by using multiple landers full of supplies and crew members. The landers will all then land in close proximity. To do this a main space craft will orbit the planet and deploy one lander a day. The landers will self-pilot in order to avoid a crash and each lander will serve a different purpose. Over time that landers will connect and form one large station. This station will be the beginning of Mars’s first city.

Once we connect the landers the people will begin to start the necessary systems such as agriculture and electricity. Orders will be to ration the food that they were packed with up until food can be grown inside farm lander. Then people will barter for supplies needed to survive. A market will then grow and friendly competition will encourage the use of superior methods and working harder to gain an edge on the competition.

Once this society begins a landing area will be marked for future people to land at. After more people arrive they will create their own government that will be charged with buying supplies in exchange for supplies. These supplies will be stored and currency will be used instead of bartering. With this second group miners, drones, and rovers will scour the planet for valuable resources. When these resources are identified the miners will have to sell these materials to space craft that will return to Earth. This travel will incentivize the owners of the space craft will search for cheaper and easier ways to get their resources.

These advancements will make overall trade between Earth and the Martian Colony easier. The revenue from this will boost the economy on Mars and incentivize people to come to Mars and for the existing residents to discover easier and cheaper ways to make money in order to compete on this free market.
